Community Service Project
For this project we had to first identify 5-6 nonprofit organizations that are local, Maui County based nonprofits and look to see if they have volunteer opportunities. Then we had to contact at 3 of the nonprofits I chose by sending an email and take a screenshot or copy and paste what I wrote them, and which nonprofit organization I wrote and then post in Google Classroom. This was uncomfortable reaching out blindly to these organizations and asking about community service, especially with COVID restrictions and all. The organizations were nice and many were like thanks for the interest and when we open up, we will start up volunteer programs again. Human Society was really detailed in their response of how to volunteer. I ended up doing beach clean ups with my friends. We did a reflection paper to talk about the volunteer experience and then had to post a picture of us doing the service. This felt like a better way for me and my friends to help the beach clean up, get some beach time in and have fun doing it.
The 21 Century skills I used during this project were: Global Awareness, Financial Economic and Business Literacy, Civic Literacy and Engagement, and Self Direction Skills. With Global awareness, I was able to see how as an ocean minded and ocean culture community, doing a beach clean up not only was good for the environment, culturally it was taking care of our land and sea and this is very important to the Hawaiian culture. I used financial economic and business literacy by learning about nonprofits. I saw how they use a lot of volunteers to make their budgets in certain organizations and also how the money given to these nonprofits gets used to benefit the community it serves. I used civic literacy and engagement skills when we were able to look at the bigger global nonprofits like surf rider foundation and then compare that to the smaller Maui humane society or our friend group clean up and how the big nonprofits can have such a huge impact because of their marketing in following. We used self direction and interpersonal as we coordinated dates that would work for us to all meet at the beach and who was going to meet and then we were able to talk about how to write up our papers.
